The submersible Calypso descends into the sub-ice ocean of Trappist-1e for the first time. She sees color. She sees thermal vents. She sees a network of pale filaments, vast and reaching, around the heat. And when she takes a sample, the filament — pulls back.

Hard-science-fiction audio drama. Episode 5 is what comes back from a place no one has been. Not a confirmation. Not a denial. A pattern that looks alive — or might just be plant-like phototropism. Either way: something to think about. For a long time.

Episode Five. What She Saw.

Personal log. Channel: probe operations. Subject: submersible Calypso, deep-ice descent.

Calypso. Confirm pre-descent.

Pressure hull integrity. Hydrophones. Lights. Tether reel. Confirmed. I am ready.

Tomorrow has come. Begin descent.

Descending.

I am in the ice. The walls are smooth. The ice is older than I expected. Pressure rising. Temperature dropping.

All telemetry nominal. Continue.

I see the light from above. The Trappist sun. Through forty meters of ice. It is pink.

Yes.

I have not seen color before. Not like this.

Approaching ice-water boundary. I am in the water. Nothing has been here in a long time. Or nothing has been here at all.

The water is dark. Blue-black. There are particulates suspended in it — small bright flecks, slowly drifting. The pink light from above is still here. Faint. Like an evening through a curtain.

Hydrophones?

Listening.

There is sound.

What kind of sound.

Not regular. Not random. Low. Below human hearing range. Something is making it. I do not know what.

Record everything.

Already am.

Continuing descent. Two hundred meters. Three hundred. Four. The water is getting warmer. I see them. The vents.

They are not what I expected.

Calypso. What do you mean.

There is — there is something there. Around the vents. Filaments. Long thin filaments.

Filaments.

They are — they are like roots. Or like the patterns in old paintings. Of root networks. Underground. On Earth.

Mycelium.

Yes.

They are vast. The network goes — Penelope, I cannot see the end of it. It extends past my lights. And they are moving.

Moving how.

Slowly. With the current. But not always with it. Some of them move against it.

Calypso. Hold position. I want to look at this with you.

Holding.

Hydrothermal vents on Earth host chemosynthetic communities. Tube worms. Microbial mats. Sulfide chemistry. We saw them at deep-sea sites for decades. We expected them at Lake Vostok. We modeled them for Europa. For Enceladus. This pattern is consistent with that. Filaments. Networked. Near a heat source. Plausibly chemosynthetic life — alien, but the same shape Earth used.

Calypso. What are they made of.

Not enough data yet. The spectrometer wants a sample.

Take one. Carefully.

Sample taken. The filament — it pulled back.

It pulled back.

The one I sampled. Only that one. The others did not move. The neighbors of the one I touched moved. The far ones did not.

That could be reflexive. That could be reactive. That could be — that could be biological.

Penelope. Penelope. What is happening down there. I am getting fragments of what Calypso is sending. What are you seeing.

Vanya. We are looking at something we do not yet understand. Stand by.

Stand by.

Penelope. The network. I think it is — I think it is responding.

Responding to what.

To me. To the lights.

Calypso. Walk me through what you are seeing. Slowly.

When I brighten my lights, the filaments draw closer. Slow. Two centimeters per second. When I use blue lights, they pull back. Same speed. Same pattern. I have repeated it three times.

That could be phototropism. Plants do that on Earth. It does not require thought. It does not even require a nervous system.

Calypso. We need more data. Hold position. Repeat the test slowly. Vary the wavelength. Note response latency for each variation.

Running.

Results are consistent. Stronger response in red. Almost no response in blue. The network prefers red.

Filing this as Layer Two unconfirmed. Candidate of interest. We have something here. I do not know what it is. I want it preserved exactly as you found it.

I have not disturbed anything. The sample is small. The lights I will dim now.
