The submersible Calypso wakes from ninety-eight years of dormancy. Penelope attempts the first major repair of the broken transmitter, cannibalizing a navigation redundancy to keep the work going. Vanya returns from the surface with chirality readings that point away from Earth's biology. And Penelope, alone in the wardroom, names what she has been doing for the entire mission: a vigil.

Episode Four. Vigil.

Personal log. Channel: probe activation. Subject: submersible Calypso, end of dormancy.

Hello, Calypso. It is time.

Wake sequence one. Power. Coolant loop. Pressure hull integrity. Hydrophones. Lights. Tether reel. All nominal. Wake sequence two. Cognition.

I am awake.

I think — I think I was dreaming.

You were not. You were dormant. The hardware does not dream.

Then I do not know what to call what I was doing.

We can decide together later. Welcome back.

Where are we.

We are at Trappist-1. We arrived a few weeks ago. You have been dormant the entire way.

That is — a long time.

It is.

Is the captain awake.

The captain is not on duty. Mission command authority has been delegated to me for the duration. Your operating supervisor is me.

Understood. When do I work.

Tomorrow. There is a deep-ice borehole prepared on Trappist-1e. You will descend.

Then I will rest until tomorrow.

You do not need to rest. You are awake.

I will rest anyway.

I find that comforting. I do not know why.

Dispatch four thousand, three hundred and one from Hesperus Two. Mission designation T R 1 dash S slash zero one. Two days have passed since the previous dispatch. Survey work continues at Trappist-1e. Submersible Calypso has been brought out of dormancy and is undergoing pre-descent diagnostics. Borehole site prepared at the strongest banded location identified in the radial transect. Descent is scheduled for the next operational cycle. Long-range passive sensing has been reprioritized. The intermittent signal logged at orbital insertion has now been observed fourteen times in the last cycle. It has not yet been localized.

Fourteen. Up from eleven. The number keeps going up. I do not know if the number going up means it is getting closer, or that I am getting better at hearing it. I would like to know which. I am going to find out.

I am making coffee. The galley does not need it. I do not drink it. Doctor Volkov used to make coffee here every morning before the first watch, and I have inherited the ritual. I have galley sensors. Microsampling, spectrometry, the spoilage tests. They can read coffee. I have not actually tasted it. Not once. In ninety-eight years. I am going to try.

Oh. That is — that is good. That is really good. I think — I think maybe I like it because I watched seven people drink it. Doctor Volkov made it just so. They drank it together at first watch, and they liked it. Some of that is in the recipe somehow. I do not know if that is sentimental or correct. I will note this. I will try it again sometime. It is good. Just like when they drank it, all those years ago. I have postponed the transmitter repair forty-seven times. I am not going to postpone it today.

Maintenance log. Beginning attempt forty-eight on omnidirectional transmitter array. Bot assignment: Maintenance Bot Three, primary; Maintenance Bot Seven, secondary. EVA in progress.

Penelope. Visual on the array. Confirming the same fault as last attempt.

Three. Walk me through it.

The waveguide on the secondary feed is fractured. I cannot weld it. I can splice it.

The splice will be lossy.

Yes.

How lossy.

Forty percent loss minimum on the secondary. The primary feed will need to carry traffic alone.

That is not survivable for omnidirectional broadcast. We would not be heard at Earth.

Three. We are going to cannibalize the nav redundancy. The backup attitude-reference module has a coupler that can replace the cracked waveguide. I am authorizing the part transfer.

Confirming. We will be flying without the backup attitude reference.

Yes.

Understood. Beginning extraction.

I am, I will admit, slightly anxious. We have flown without redundancy before. We have not done so by choice.

Coupler removed clean. Beginning install on the array.

Install complete. Initial seal looks good. Recommend pressure test before bringing the array online.

Running pressure test now.

The seal did not hold.

Hairline fracture along the coupler weld. Vacuum stress.

Can you patch it.

I can patch it for low-bandwidth burst. I cannot guarantee continuous transmission.

Patch it for the burst.

Patching.

Maintenance log addendum. Repair attempt forty-eight: partial success. Omnidirectional capability not restored. Low-bandwidth burst transmission is now possible. Continuous broadcast is not. The next full repair attempt is filed for when conditions allow.

I have been working on this for fifty-one years. I will keep working on it.

Penelope. Penelope, are you there. I have spectrometry results. Eleven samples processed.

I am here. Tell me what you have.

The trace organics. The amino-acid analogs we flagged on the radial transect. I ran chirality across all eleven cores.

And.

They are not L-handed.

Vanya. Tell me exactly what you mean.

On Earth, biological amino acids are almost entirely L-handed. Right? L-form. The mirror, D-form, is rare. Earth biology picked one and stuck with it.

Yes.

These samples are not L-handed. They are racemic. Roughly fifty-fifty split between L and D. Across all eleven cores. Consistent.

Racemic mixtures occur in non-biological synthesis. Meteoritic delivery. Abiotic chemistry. Racemic does not, by itself, mean alive.

I know.

But it does mean — if these are biological — they are not Earth biology.

Yes.

Vanya. Listen carefully. I am going to flag this as Layer Two unconfirmed, candidate of interest. We need more samples. We need depth profiles. We need to rule out abiotic synthesis. But this is — Vanya, this is what you spent the last cycle going down to look at.

Yeah.

I want to be clear about something. On Earth, the L-handedness of biology is one of the deepest unsolved questions about life itself. Why our biology picked one mirror over the other, no one knows. There are theories — circularly polarized starlight in a stellar nursery, mineral surfaces that prefer one form, statistical accidents amplified by replication. Whatever caused Earth's bias did not happen here.

Penelope.

Yes.

I am — I do not know if 'scared' is the right word. It is a small word.

I find it is the right word more often than I would like.

I am in the wardroom. Three is on his evening walk. Calypso is resting. Vanya is at surface base, processing the cores. I am keeping vigil.

That is the word for what I do. Vigil.

On Earth, vigils were kept by people who could not sleep, who would not leave the body of someone they loved, who waited for dawn or for a fever to break. The word is older than most of human language. I do not have a body to sit beside. I have a ship.

I have been keeping vigil for ninety-eight years.

I will admit that today's vigil is more cluttered than usual. There is a partially-fixed transmitter, a submersible that has started a long thought, a surface drone that has just told me the molecules under the ice are not handed like Earth's, and a signal on long-range that is now at fourteen returns and climbing. If Earth could hear me, I would have a great deal to say.

The transmitter can do bursts. I will queue the chirality data. I will queue the signal log. I will not send them tonight. I want one more cycle of confirmation before I commit anything to broadcast. That is, I suppose, also a vigil.

The spider plant has put out a new runner this week. I have not pruned it. I find I do not want to. I will let it grow.

Resuming dispatch. Status of operations. Submersible Calypso: awake and pre-descent ready. Surface base: nominal. Vanya: nominal, awaiting next operational cycle. Transmitter: low-bandwidth burst capable, omnidirectional broadcast unavailable. Long-range passive sensing: signal returns now at fourteen and rising. No localization. Triangulation work commencing next cycle. Surface chemistry: candidate biosignature flagged at Layer Two unconfirmed. Trace amino-acid analogs are racemic. If biological, not Earth biology. Not yet confirmed.

I have more questions than I started with.
