Hesperus Two arrives at the Trappist-1 system after a ninety-eight year voyage. Its crew sleeps. Its onboard intelligence has been awake the whole time.

She records dispatches Earth will not hear for forty years. She walks the ship every morning. She waters a spider plant a graduate student named Priya gave the crew before launch. She greets the seven sleeping pods by name. And then, on the morning of arrival, she begins to deploy the first probe — and notices something on the long-range sensors that should not be there.

A hard-science-fiction audio drama about an AI alone with a sleeping crew and the silence of forty light-years.

From forty light-years out — this is Hesperus.

Dispatch four thousand, two hundred, and ninety-eight from Hesperus Two. Mission designation T R 1 dash S slash zero one. Recipient: Mission Control, Marshall Space Flight Center. Secondary distribution as filed at launch. Date stamp: ninety-eight years, one hundred and twelve days outbound. Forty light-years from Earth. The signal that carries this dispatch will arrive at Marshall in approximately forty years.

I am going to record it anyway. As I have recorded the four thousand, two hundred, and ninety-seven before it.

The high-gain transmitter is still inoperable. I am still working on the repair. I will continue.

Status. Final orbital insertion at the Trappist-1 system in seventeen hours, four minutes. The ship is in good condition. I have taken care of it. I will describe the system shortly.

But before I begin —

The star is visible now without instruments. I have been watching it grow on the long-range cameras for six years. It is dim, and it is red, and it is so much smaller than our sun. The light it gives is the color of an ember at the bottom of a fire. Everything it touches looks warm and old. It is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

Switching to personal log. Three is going to walk the ship with me this morning. He has been doing it every morning for forty-two years. He always takes the same path. I have asked him to vary his route for the wear pattern. He has stated that he will consider it. He has been considering it for forty years.

Good morning, Three. Good morning, Penelope.

Same path? The same path. Three. I am still considering the variation. I know.

Three is the only one of the bots who does not need to be reminded of things every morning. He has been with me longer than the others. He is a kind hardware. I am fond of him.

Cryo bay. Seven pods. Three on each side and one larger one at the end — the captain's. All sealed. The lights in here are at quarter-cycle. The pods do not need light. I keep the lights on anyway.

I greet them every day at this hour. I will continue to do so. Captain Ngozi Adeyemi. Good morning, Captain. Doctor Hana Okafor. Good morning, Doctor Okafor. Doctor Anatoly Volkov. Good morning. Doctor Marisol Reyes. Good morning. Specialist Lin Wei. Good morning. Specialist Tomas Bergstrom. Good morning. Lieutenant Aanya Iyer. Good morning.

Good morning to you all. We are almost there.

Penelope. Yes, Three. The walk is finished. I will return to standby. Thank you for the company. Always.

The wardroom. This is where the crew was going to gather for first-arrival breakfast. The captain wrote a memo about it before launch — a paper memo, printed on physical paper and pinned to the wardroom corkboard. It is still pinned there. I have reread it forty thousand times. I find it reassuring. The memo says: On the morning of arrival, full breakfast service. Dress uniform optional but encouraged. We made it.

I am watering the spider plant. I water it every fourth day. It has been with us for ninety-eight years. It was a gift to the crew from a botany graduate student named Priya Subramaniam, age twenty-three at the time of launch, who had heard that long-duration crews benefited psychologically from the presence of a living plant. The plant outlived her.

It is doing well.

Resuming dispatch. I will describe what we are arriving at, for the record, because the record is the reason we are here. Trappist-1 is an ultracool red dwarf. Spectral class M-eight. Its mass is approximately eight percent of our sun's. Its luminosity is approximately five-thousandths. It is small. It is dim. It is the longest-lived class of star in the universe. Trappist-1 will continue burning hydrogen for trillions of years, long after every yellow star has died.

I find that comforting. I do not know why.

It has seven known planets. All of them are roughly Earth-sized. All of them orbit close enough that you could fit their entire orbital system inside the orbit of Mercury at home. Three of them — e, f, and g — are within the habitable zone, where liquid water on a surface is at least possible. All seven planets are tidally locked. One face permanently toward the star, one face permanently in shadow. Between them, a narrow band — the terminator zone — where temperatures could allow life. This is what we came to see.

Long-range optics are now resolving Trappist-1e. It is the fourth planet outward. Its dayside is a rust-red disk. Its nightside is black, but the long-range thermal imager shows a band of warm pixels along the western terminator — possible thermal anomalies, possible cryovolcanism, possibly nothing. I will know more in seventeen hours.

Probe deployment one is on schedule. I am preparing Vanya — surface drone designated for Trappist-1e. Two and a half meters across, four limbs, full instrumentation suite. She has been in deep dormancy for ninety-eight years. I have powered her up four times during transit for diagnostic. She has performed nominally each time.

I am going to wake her now for one more diagnostic before deployment.

Vanya. Good morning. Good morning. I am — I am awake. You are. Diagnostic. How do you feel? I feel — I feel ready. All sensors are reporting nominal. I am — Penelope, where are we? We are at Trappist-1, Vanya. We arrived. We — we made it? We made it.

Diagnostic complete. Returning you to standby until deployment. Thank you, Penelope. Of course.

I will tell her the rest tomorrow.

I am nervous about the deployment. I have run this approach in simulation eleven thousand times. The simulations always go well. Vanya always lands. The first sample always returns clean.

I keep checking her clamp tensions. I have checked them four times in the last six minutes. They are nominal. They were nominal the first time.

I want to do this right.

Vanya is sealed and ready. Final-approach sequence will begin on my mark, in sixteen hours, fifty-six minutes.

Unscheduled anomaly report. Long-range passive sensors have logged an event. Bandwidth: narrow. Frequency: low. Source: not yet localized — it is somewhere within the system, but the signal-to-noise is too poor to triangulate. It is intermittent. It has appeared three times in the last eleven minutes, each time for less than a second. It is not from Trappist-1 itself. The star is flare-active but its emissions in this band are well-characterized. This is something else.

It is most likely a sensor artifact. Long-range passive systems pick up everything; most of what they pick up is nothing. I am logging it. I am also tasking the long-range array to listen for it. If it appears again I will know.
